Meet the Board!

In MAES at UCI we are composed of vibrant and brilliant minds and we are fortunate enough to have a board this year with a diverse knowledge across various fields that helps bring MAES to life. Below you can find a small description of our 2021-2022 Board Members to include their position, their specific field of study, and a little bit into what makes them unique.

Co-President:

Eric Tavarez

Hello, my name is Eric Tavarez. I am the Co-President of MAES for the 2021-2022 school year and I am a 4th year civil engineering major looking to specialize in transportation civil engineering. I have decided to become a board member of MAES because it is such an amazing opportunity to professionally grow and help others develop a professional mindset while contributing to our blossoming Latino community at UCI. An interesting fact about me is that I went skydiving on my 18th birthday and hope to one day go wingsuit flying.

Co-President:

Jonathan Alderete

Hello, my name is Jonathan Alderete, I am a 4th-year Mechanical Engineering major. As Co-President of MAES, I want to continue providing our members with all the wonderful resources and opportunities for growth this organization has to offer. I have taken up this role because MAES has had a major impact on my personal and professional development. I also want to continue to empower the next generations of Latinx scientists and engineers to strive for success and help them achieve their academic and professional goals. Fun Fact: Caramel macchiatos and yerba mates have become a staple of my college lifestyle.

In the future I hope to be involved in research within the field of biophotonics and imaging. A fun fact about myself is I practice pyrography, I use a soldering tool to burn on wood, cardboard, or leather to make art

Co-External Vice-President:

Nayeli Inzunza

Hola Familia! A little bit about myself, I am a 3rd-year Public Health Sciences major. My reason for being a board member for MAES was simply because I want to be able to provide the Latinx community here at UCI with endless amount of resources and opportunity for professional development. Many of us come from underrepresented and low-income communities, through MAES we can all come together to represent and show that all Latinos are capable of accomplishing and fulfilling their dreams. As for my own goals, I aspire to one day be a Nurse at a children's hospital. A fun fact about myself is that I have had a beta fish for 3 years now.

Co-External Vice-President:

Jacqueline Alvarez

I am a 4th year Public Health Science Major at UCI. I have been in MAES since my freshmen year and have had some of the best memories at UCI with MAES. I was first introduced to MAES through CAMP, ever since then I have been heavily involved with MAES. I enjoy recruiting students to MAES because I want others to feel like they have a familia. I was afraid that I was going to be alone at UCI until I found MAES and I don't want anyone else feeling left out which is why I decided to become a Board member. Once I graduate from UCI I hope to go into a Master Entry Level Nursing Program so that I can hopefully become a Nurse Practitioner. Aside from school I enjoy the arts such as dancing and music. I have been a Folklorico dancer since I was 7 and am now a Folklorico Performer at Disneyland. I also am a big fan of sports, specifically football. I love watching football with my friends and family. #GoNiners

Secretary:

Daniela Murillo

Hi! My name is Daniela Murillo and I am currently a third year mechanical engineering major. I wanted to become a board member because I thought it was a great opportunity to gain experience doing something that I enjoy while helping out the community. My future goals include being able to enjoy my life doing something that I love while being able to help others. A fun fact about me is that I've taken my corgi to corgi beach day (he loved it)!

Outreach Coordinator:

Jose Rea

I am a 4th year Computer Science and Engineering major. I became a board member because I was involved with ALMA Science academy before joining MAES and wanted to contribute further. In the future I plan on applying to grad school. I am also a Ballet Folklorico Dancer and I have been dancing for 12 years.

Hi! I’m 3rd year Mechanical Engineering student. I became a MAES board member because of the familia type of environment. They were one of the 1st clubs I joined during my 1st year, I was able to meet new friends and connect with others thanks to MAES. One of my future goals would be to obtain my Masters degree and one fun fact about me is I play the guitar and I’m learning how to play the piano!

Academic Director:

Marlon Pinedo

Picture
Hello everyone! My name is Marlon Pinedo, 4th-year Materials Science Engineering Major, and I am the incoming Academic Director for MAES. I first joined MAES as an incoming freshman through CSSA where I was greeted by a Familia. I decided to become a board member initially as an opportunity to grow as a leader. After my undergrad, I am looking forward to heading into a masters program geared towards solid mechanics. A fun fact about me is that I absolutely love to sing norteña and banda music!!! Arriba Zacatecas Chingao!

Treasurer:

Joseph Rodriguez

Picture
Hey, my name is Joseph Rodriguez and I am a 4th year Civil Engineering major. I decided to become a MAES board member because I wanted to contribute to the Latino community on campus and help other students feel a sense of community. I felt like the best way to do this was to become a board member. A fun fact about myself is that I just started to learn to play the accordion and I also like to sing. A goal that I have set for myself is to learn more than a few songs on the accordion.

Social Chair:

Christopher Alan Arauzo

Picture
My name is Christopher Alan Arauzo and I am a second year mechanical engineering student. I am proud to be the new Social Chair for MAES because I can reach out to students, like myself, who don't have experience with being at the university or know what to do once they get here. Being Social Chair allows me to spread the word about MAES and advertise everything that it has to offer. In the future I hope to develop engineering experience through companies such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Space X, through research, and by participating in clubs such as MAES. A fun fact about myself is that I have ran two LA Marathons and I once won a speech competition while talking about how much I like granola bars and chocolate chip cookies.

Webmaster:

Melissa Sanchez

Picture
Hello! My name is Melissa Sanchez and I am a second year Biological Sciences major. I joined MAES as a way to reach out to other Latinx students and gain support as a minority STEM student. However, after seeing the lack of natural sciences in MAES, I decided to run for Webmaster as a first step towards increasing the diversity of STEM major representation in the club. In the future, I hope to complete research during my stay at UCI and apply for medical school to become a radiologist, however, I am also open to doing research for a PhD. A quick fun fact about me is that I study skin care ingredients as a hobby.
